Top TEN SALES December 2016

I guess the proper title of this post should be Top 11 Sales because I had a tie but it just doesn’t sound right.

Here is what December produced for me at the top.

1. St John Black Jeweled 2pc Suit  $172.50

st-john-2pc-suit-black-172-50

The Story:

This was one of FIVE St John pieces on my top 11 this month and they all came from the same, local estate sale.  A few days before the sale they had mentioned on facebook that they had high-end women’s clothing.  The day of the sale I looked at the ad again to get the address and noticed they had added some more pictures and one of the new pictures was of a St John piece.  I looked at the clock and it was 8:45 and the sale had already started at 8:30.  I WAS FREAKING OUT.  Seriously, freaking out.  I was so afraid that someone else was going to get there and buy this St John piece that was shown in the pictures.  My heart was racing.

Holy Crap.  I’m 40 years old and my blood pressure and heart rate are going up because I’m scared someone else is going to buy a St John outfit before me.  What is going on?

Fortunately, I made it to the sale around 9:00 and found five different St John outfits / pieces that I paid a total of $75.00 for.

No one beat me to it.  It was a good day.

This was listed on auction at $149.99 and was bid up.

Price Paid:  $15.00

2.  Hart Schaffner Marx 2pc Suit 46 R  $162.50

The Story:

This was truly the beauty of auction.  Two people REALLY wanted this suit and I kind of feel like I was the lucky winner.  It was purchased in a mid market, thrift store along with a couple other Hart Schaffner Marx suits which also did well for me.  There is a sweet spot with suit sizes and 46 R is one size that does well in general.

This was listed on auction at $49.99 and was bid up.

Price Paid:  $6.00

3.  St John Green 3pc Suit $149.99

Price Paid:  $15.00

4.  St John Black 2pc Jacket & Shell $142.50

The Story:

This was listed on auction at 124.99 and was bid up.

Price Paid:  $15.00

5.  Oxxford Cashmere Overcoat $140.05

oxxford-coat

The Story:

This was purchased from a mid-market thrift store (Salvation Army) but it had some minor flaws.  The underarm lining and kick pleat were torn but the exterior of the coat was in great shape which made it okay to sell.

I felt like this was karma.

A couple of months ago, I found an Oxxford cashmere coat in Oklahoma City and was super excited only to find moth damage and had to pass on it.  It was my first time finding a pure cashmere, Oxxford coat and was disappointed that it was flawed.

I’m the guy who picks up clothes that fall off hangers and onto the floor and hang them back up on the rack.  I do this because I believe in thrift store karma.  This coat is an example.  Treat the store, its employees and its inventory with respect and you will be rewarded.

It was listed on auction at $99.99 and was bid up.

Price Paid:  $10.00

6.  St John 3pc Outfit $103.50

The Story:

I wasn’t sure of the colors on this one but it still did very well!

It was listed on auction at $99.99 and was bid up.

Price Paid:  $15.00

7.  Vintage 60s Red 100% Cashmere & Mink Coat $102.50

The Story:

This was purchased at a large market thrift store with a 30% off coupon.  I knew it was good but I also know that vintage, cashmere coats can be hit and miss.  Especially women’s cashmere coats.  I felt really good about this one.

It was listed on auction at $74.99 and bid up.

Price Paid: $9.00

8.  1940s 2pc Pant Suit $99.99

40s-suit-99-99

The story:

Two months in a row with a 1940s suit selling for $99.99.  Both of them purchased in a mid-market thrift store and had to wait for a buy it now.  It makes me wonder if I should bump the price next time to $124.99 or $149.99.  I might try that next time.  I don’t think it’s the price…I think it’s waiting for the right buyer.

It was listed on auction at $99.99 and did not sell.  It was re-listed as a buy it now and sold.

Price Paid:  $6.00

9.  Lavender St John Jacket $99.99

st-john-lavender-jacket-99-99

The Story:

Out of all the St John I purchased at the estate sale this one had the lowest amount of watchers (2) but it still got the bid.

It was listed on auction at $99.99 and received one bid.

Price Paid:  $15.00

10.  Vintage Black Gemini Cape Coat $99.99

gemini-cape-coat-99-99

The Story:

This was purchased at a large market thrift store with a 30% off coupon.  Fortunately, I had run across a Gemini cape before and done research on it and knew that it was a good buy.  If you haven’t seen one of these before, they are nice!  Outstanding fabric and you can just tell its high quality.  There were a few completed listings to compare for pricing and I felt that I priced it fairly aggressively.

It was listed on auction at $99.99 and received one bid.

Price Paid:  $10.00

11.  Angelo Roma Deadstock 2pc Suit $99.99

angelo-roma-suit

The Story:

This was purchased at a large market thrift store with a 30% off coupon.  I thought it was a super cool suit and it was still in its brand new condition with tags.  After doing some research, I found out that Angelo Roma designed the suits for James Bond in the 1970s.  I couldn’t find any completed listings to compare it with but knowing that it was the same designer used for James Bonds movies I decided to price it high and go with it.

I had to wait awhile but it eventually sold without having to alter the price.

However, it sold to a customer in Bloomington, Indiana which is the home of Indiana University and this suit just happens to match the Hoosiers colors.  I think the person who purchased this had nothing to do with James Bond but more to do with the high-flying basketball team that Bloomington loves.

Good for them.  Good for me.

It was listed on auction for $99.99 and didn’t sell.  It was re-listed as a buy it now and sold.

Price Paid:  $7.00

  1. I was wondering where you got all the St John stuff. Very cool! I am also the one re – hanging stuff at Goodwill, still waiting for the good Karma to hit me though! Love this info! Keep them coming!

    • The karma will come – I promise! I love that you do that as well.

Another idea to find St John is Craigslist. I know it’s a stretch but sometimes Omaha or KC will have some type of estate sale or individual who is selling. It’s worth the drive if you can find it. Plus you can make a day out of it and hit other stores while you are there.

  2. In December, I had a couple heavy Carhartt / hunting coats sell for $59.99 & three different pairs of jeans sell for $59.99.

No big hitters for me, but I did have 515 sales, which was up from just under 500 in November.
